Frequently Asked Questions
This is where you ask questions and I give answers. Any general information about the site that is not covered in the rules/staff info/RPG guide are posted here.
I think I was sorted into the wrong house. Can I switch?
Absolutely not! Where the sorting hat puts you is where you remain; and that is not to be mean. Just imagine the chaos if everyone could switch houses! What would be the point of sorting you if you got to just choose? That’d be no fun…if you don’t like the house you’ve been sorted into, I’m sorry but you’ll just have to adapt.
Why was I sorted into <insert house here>?
Here at PA we sort based on character personality. We closely look at the qualities and traits your character has and decide which house they best belong in. This is why your sorting may be done some time after your registration, because we are stuck on which house to put you in. It’s not something done at random. We put a lot of thought and consideration into each sorting because that’s the way we are and once we have decided, you’re not changing.
How do I upload an avatar/signature of my own?
To upload any graphic, you must first get an account on an image hosting site. I would strongly recommend www.photobucket.com .
To upload an Avatar: upload your image on your Photobucket, and get the link marked URL. Paste it into your profile where all avatar URLs go.
To upload a Signature: this is why I suggest Photobucket. To upload a signature is pretty much the same, but instead of copying the URL link to your clipboard, copy the IMG link instead. Then paste it into the Signature box located in your edit profile area.
Why aren't there threads in some places?
Because since Sectumsempra is a Role-Play community, the role players create their own threads to begin role play. In some areas you'll notice I have already started the RPG...but the Headmistress can't do that everywhere, can she? As the players, you control the game. You can start a new thread basically anywhere you'd like on the forum, as long as it is appropriate!
We get house points, and there's mention of contests...so where are they?
Well, Potterholics Anonymous is doing things a lot different. The contests once again have their own board (it’s labeled contests and resides in OOC) but they may also be hidden throughout the forum. The Teachers may assign them in class. A staff member or myself may enter it into role play randomly, and it is up to the members to complete the task. It can be done in many ways and there are no exceptions. Just keep your eyes peeled for them!
Can I have More than One Character?
Actually, you may. But there are some conditions to doing so:
*You must create a new account for said character
*You MUST tell Gage, Damien, and Allena via OWL message who the new character is--just so we can keep tabs on who everyone is.
*Don't make more than you can keep up with. Be sure to keep your characters to a number YOU can handle. I won't give you a maximum unless it starts getting ridiculous.
Can my Character DIE?
Yes. He/she can. I am still working out the specifics, but once your character dies, you have two choices: they can become a ghost, or you can create a new character in his/her place.
Your character can die a number of different ways (death by Dark Mistress/ DE, ministry execution, suicide, etc.). They can only die IF you wish them to die. No one is allowed to kill your character without you consent. It is your character after all.
I want to have <insert celebrity name here> for my character but they are already claimed by <insert character name here> and they haven’t been on in X amount of time. Can I have the celebrity?
Yes you can. Depending on how long it's been since the last log in date for that character, yes.
How do we know what day it is? I'm getting very confused with the timeframes here, since we can role play in several different boards at once
Don't let timeframes confuse you. In fact, don't worry about what day it is, ever. Also, the month in which we role play is simply something to keep structure, and so you know when important events are coming (ex, Halloween Ball in Octobter or Christmas time in December).
If you start a thread before your class begins, that happened before that class. Or if it's obvious, such as the 'getting on the train' thread apparently happened before anything else at Hogwarts went on.
If you become too confused, you may put specifics at the beginning of the thread such as "before the potions class" or "before dinner".
Don't get yourself confused trying to figure out what day it is, because since we all obviously can't be on each day together to role play day-by-day, we just kind of...go with the flow. You can specify different days whenever you see it fit (such as the classes, counseling, common rooms, etc.), but it is virtually impossible to stamp a specific day on some things. If you still can't understand, just think of it as you're attending daily classes/dinners/etc, but you are role-playing just a few of them.
I hope that creates a better understanding.
Can I play my character's family members without having to make a new character?
In most cases, absolutely. For instance, a minor role that will not be seen often around the site is perfectly fine, like when your character is at home and is interacting with family members. But if you have a family member that you want to post with as frequently as your own character, I may ask you to just create a new character for that person.
When do we have Hogsmeade weekends?
Here's the thing about Hogsmeade--I'm going to let you go when you like. It's too difficult to get everyone online at the same time and I don't like to restrict it anyways. Personally, I love just making threads in Hogsmeade when that mood strikes. Just make sure you're posting in the school too
